回顾自己小时候爱上篮球运动的过程，詹姆斯说：“我不清楚具体的那一刻，但我能看到篮球比赛。我看到了一些最伟大的球员打比赛，我受到了他们的激励，比如乔丹、‘便士’哈达威、格兰特-希尔等这些家伙都激励了我。他们的球鞋激励了我，他们当年所做的广告激励了我。
“然后就是出去玩，我一直都是那个什么都想尝试一下的孩子。我们在玩捉迷藏，我们在玩橄榄球、棒球、篮球，什么都玩，还有踢球游戏，那在我们的社区里非常流行。就是到处跑着玩，尽量消耗活力，一直玩到街上的路灯都亮了才是回家的时候。我就是什么都想玩一下。
“我认为然后就是当我进入青少年联盟，开始参加有竞争的比赛，我就是喜欢篮球的竞争本质。场上5对5，我们也为某些东西而战。我们打球是为了看看谁得到最高分并且赢下比赛。这样逐步发展到，哦，如果我们赢下大多数比赛，我们就能赢得一些东西。我们赢了冠军，就可以参加宴会，我们能得到奖牌和小小的奖杯。那些东西激励了我。因为我看过NBA和大学球员在赛季结束的时候可以举起奖杯之类的。我认为那非常激励人心。作为孩子，你总是受到那些已经在这么做的人的激励。所以，对我而言那是一个很重大的时刻。”
